The 4th Annual Downey Ranch & Kniebel Cattle Co. Joint Production Sale was held Friday, November 3, at the Downey Ranch, Wamego, KS. Another beautiful, sunny day greeted a large crowd of prospective customers as they looked over the offering and enjoyed the always popular smoked brisket lunch. Enthusiastic bidders made their choices from among 58 Black & Red Angus bulls along with 65 commercial bred heifers and 21 open fall commercial heifers. At the end of the day, cattle found new homes in Kansas, Ohio, Kentucky, Missouri, South Dakota, Oklahoma and New Mexico. The high selling bulls in both breeds went to repeat buyers, with Neil Barton of Abilene, KS selecting Red Angus Bull KCC Kingmaker 209-545 for $4600. The high selling Black Angus bull was DRI Retail Product R178 who sold to Jim Howes of Howes’ Ranch Management, Whiting, KS for $3800. Volume bull buyers with 7 head each were repeat buyers Western Star Ag Resources of Salina, KS and Dan & Tamara Clawson, Clawson Ranches, Meade, KS. The 20 Red Angus Bulls from KCC averaged $2875 while the 38 Black Angus bulls from DRI averaged $2440. Bidding on the always popular Bred Commercial Heifers was extremely active, setting a new sale record of $2100/head for a set of commercial Angus heifers AI’d to Sinclair Net Present Value. Those heifers along with 2 other groups found a new home with Oak Creek Land & Cattle of Chapman, KS. In addition, Oak Creek chose to purchase the Calve-Out Option for all of their bred heifers which gives them an industry unique Live Calf Guarantee. Volume bred heifer buyers at the sale were again Mr. & Mrs. Gene Murray of Auburn, KS. They purchased 25 heifers from both ranches and have now purchased heifers in every DRI/KCC production sale. The average for all 65 heifers was $1560/hd with 30 bred heifers from KCC averaging $1350 and the 35 head from DRI averaging $1750. New to this year’s sale were the Commercial Open Fall Heifers offered by Downey Ranch. 21 head averaged $1150, with the high selling lot of F1 Baldy heifers going to Christopher Claflin of Linwood, KS for $1200/head. Volume buyer in the open heifers was Driscoll Cattle Co. of Russell, KS, purchasing 2 lots (8 head total). The Carpenter/Downey family & the Kniebel families wish to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to ALL of this years buyers, bidders and attendees. Both operations are gratified and encouraged by the number of repeat buyers at the sale and wish to welcome all of this year’s new buyers to the fold. Please mark Friday, November 2, 2007 on the calendar for next year’s event, the 5th Annual DRI/KCC Joint Production Sale.
