| The mature cows have cranked up big time and again, the
weather has been pretty darn good. DRY, but that's not bad for
calving, unless it means it's going to turn into a major drought. I
sure hope not. We did end up having a few more colder days, but
nothing we couldn't handle. With the start of the mature herd calving, we again crank up the Sandhills Calving System which I've described before. This year however, Herdsman Mike Hall had been doing a lot of reading about Bud Williams and his methods of handling livestock. He was so enthused, he went down to TX for one of Mr. Williams clinics. He absolutely loved it. Later, Mike, Joe and Papa Joe Downey went to a day long clinic where a great deal of the day was spent adapting Mr.Willaims' principles. We have come to call this method "putting the Voo-Doo on 'em." Read more here. We are now adopting a lot of these principles and are finding very good success with them as we sort the uncalved cows out and move them onto new pasture, as per the Sandhills method. The yearling bulls on test are really looking good. We'll weigh them off-test, ultrasound and semen evaluate them, and make the final culling decisions in March. |
